The United Nations General Assembly adopted a landmark resolution on March 25.
The resolution, sponsored by Ghana, is a further step towards recognizing reparations related to the transatlantic slave trade.
It is about “affirming the truth and paving the way for healing and restorative justice,” emphasized Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, who also serves as the current Chairperson of the African Union.
The text, adopted by a very large majority, proclaims that “the slave trade and racialized slavery of Africans constitute the most serious crimes against humanity.”
These crimes represented a “decisive turning point” in history, as they “continue to affect the lives of all peoples through racialized systems of labor, property, and capital.”
