The Tribune Africa55Durable: The Solitude of the Righteous — When Honesty Becomes a Social Anomaly
In societies beset by profound systemic crises, the perception of virtue undergoes a formidable distortion. When corruption, cronyism, and backroom deals become entrenched in the workings of public and economic life, probity ceases to be a shared norm and becomes a disturbing anomaly.
The "Who does he think he is?" syndrome
Anyone who chooses to stand firm on strict principles, refuse tacit compromises, or advocate for unwavering rigor in matters of transparency and the fight against financial crime is immediately subjected to a curious trial of illegitimacy. In such a climate, integrity is no longer hailed as a universal moral compass; it is suspected of arrogance.
The honest manager is often labeled "pretentious," "naive," or "stingy," incapable as they are of conceiving that an individual might act out of simple ethical imperative. Unable to decipher pure honesty in an environment where everything is bought and sold, those around them or the decision-making circles impose their own greedy interpretations: if someone refuses a deal or a hidden commission, it's because they are disrupting the established order or demonstrating a culpable lack of realism.
The shattered mirror of compromises
Ultimately, this visceral rejection of integrity stems from a psychological and collective defense mechanism. The upright man acts as a magnifying mirror. His mere presence, his immaculate signature, and his refusal to participate in predatory networks brutally confront everyone with their own compromises.
Accepting the integrity of others would force too many people to acknowledge the extent of their own compromises. It is therefore socially more reassuring and comfortable to marginalize the honest person, to label them "cursed" or marginal, in order to better legitimize a system where wrongdoing has become the implicit rule of survival.
Redefining the standard
This ongoing trial of upright consciences illustrates the absolute urgency of a fundamental shift in mindsets. As long as integrity is perceived as a solitary and penalizing eccentricity, nations will continue to mortgage their potential to short-sighted networks. Restoring virtue to its central place is not a matter of angelic naiveté, but an absolute imperative of sovereignty and sustainable development.
